Here at the TLLT your journey into becoming a teacher is an extremely exciting and rewarding one. It takes a special type of person to become a primary school teacher, one who is empathetic, patient and passionate and who wants to make a difference.
We have been training teachers for over 10 years in the Middlesbrough area and are extremely proud of our partnership with York St John University and local schools. Within that time, we have successfully trained over 150 students who have gone on to enjoy successful careers in primary school teaching.
About the programme
Our Primary School Centred Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) is a full time one-year teacher training programme where you will train towards gaining your Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and will enable you to gain and develop your skills in the classroom.
TLLT are proud of their partnership with York St John University who have been training teachers since 1841. The university is recognised as one of the best ITE providers in the country. In their latest Ofsted report (2022) the overall provision was judged as ‘good’, with an ‘outstanding’ rating awarded to leadership in the primary age category.
You will be based either within one of our local trust schools, but we also have strong partnerships with a diverse range of schools outside of TLLT. You will work under the guidance of dedicated and supportive primary practitioners gaining a thorough understanding of the current primary and early years curriculum, including core and foundation subjects. As a student teacher you will learnfrom the very best and will enjoy interacting with pupils and working as a valued member of school staff.
Throughout the year you will be supported by a fully trained mentor who will work with you to ensure that you receive the highest quality training so that you are ready for your first year as a primary school teacher.
Academic training and workshops both at university and within school are designed to integrate theory and practice and develop a deeper pedagogical knowledge. These sessions not only ensure that you understand the theories behind effective teaching methods but also equip you with subject-specific knowledge ready for the classroom.
During our training you will become a self-reflective practitioner who is equipped to teach the diverse and individual needs of our children in the 21st century.
Schools within our trust are fully diverse and inclusive giving student teachers a broad range of experience within their training.

“I found my niche working with children, it’s always been a passion of mine so this course was perfect for me. I was not only working on my home ground and working in some gorgeous schools but it was a chance to really get stuck into working in the profession. You really get to understand how the teacher life is and it’s given me life skills that I will take forever in all that I do. It’s the best job in the world and the best choice I ever made to do this course and train to be a teacher. It is truly the most amazing experience. The support you get, whether this is from staff within the school or the people who run the course, it is such a supportive network of people.”
From the interview day, right through until
my final observation I was made to feel at ease. My time in both of the host schools was amazing and I was lucky enough to have trained alongside some incredible teaching staff from whom I learnt a great deal. The hands on approach, mixed with high quality training days gave me the best possible start to a career in teaching. Despite being challenging, it was undoubtedly the most rewarding year of my life. I can’t thank those involved enough for all their hard work and the time they gave me.
