A TEESSIDE primary school has become one of just a small number in the area to receive ‘Strong’ ratings across the board from Government inspectors.

Ofsted inspectors described Breckon Hill Primary School, in Middlesbrough, as “a friendly and welcoming school where pupils feel safe and happy”, and awarded the school ‘Strong’ judgements in all seven evaluation categories.

Headteacher Joanne Smith said: “We are absolutely delighted with this outcome. This achievement belongs to everyone within our school community, and recognises the relentless hard work, care, and ambition that underpin everything we do.

“We are deeply grateful for the unwavering support of our parents and carers, the expertise provided by our colleagues across the Trust, and the dedication of every member of staff.

“We would also like to thank our governing body, and most importantly, we would like to thank our wonderful pupils. Their enthusiasm, resilience, kindness, and love of learning make Breckon Hill such a special place to be.”

Inspectors specifically noted the positive interactions between staff and pupils, writing: “All staff are aspirational for what children will achieve.

“This results in high-quality interactions between children and adults with staff carefully modelling the language they want children to learn.

“As a result of high-quality teaching, and effective support, pupils quickly secure strong foundations for future learning.”

Under Ofsted’s revised inspection framework, schools are now assessed across seven areas: Achievement, Curriculum and Teaching, Inclusion, Attendance and Behaviour, Personal Development and Wellbeing, Leadership and Governance, and Early Years provision.

This was also the school’s first inspection since it joined The Legacy Learning Trust, and chief executive office Sarah Lymer praised the efforts of staff.

“We are so proud that Ofsted were able to see what an exceptional school Breckon Hill is, and how the staff team’s diligence, commitment and care  is making a tangible difference to the lives of so many children,” she said.

“We are delighted that this report recognises and celebrates the hard work staff put in every day.

“Very few schools nationally have achieved ‘Strong’ judgements in all areas, which highlights the flagship work by the headteacher and her team to meet the needs of this unique school.”
